That moment was a revelation.” This initial spark of joy led Stewart to explore the idea of writing his own book. With the support of a talented illustrator, Stewart’s first children’s book, *I’m Not Too Small*, was born.

His fourth book, *Jeffery Goes to Japan*, exemplifies his commitment to broadening young readers' horizons while delivering empowering messages.

Stewart’s characters are inspired by his own experiences and community. He draws from his life as an inner-city youth to create relatable and diverse characters such as Mr. Harlem and Coach. These figures offer children a window into his world and underscore the importance of resilience and self-worth.

The Power of Illustration

Illustrations play a crucial role in Stewart’s storytelling. His collaboration with illustrators, including Tre Brinson and a Belarusian artist found via Instagram, brings his stories to vivid life. Stewart describes his experience with Brinson: “It felt like having Disney sitting right next to me. He captured exactly what was in my head.”

Writing for children comes with its own set of challenges, particularly in ensuring age-appropriate content. Stewart addresses these challenges by focusing on relatable conflicts and resolutions, making his books both entertaining and educational.
